Nanjing University (NJU)

Nanjing University (NJU) is located in Nanjing, a city in East China and roughly 300 km away from Shanghai. Once serving as the capital of 10 Chinese dynasties in history, nowadays Nanjing is one of the country’s significant science and education centres, and has recently been selected by the UNESCO as the City of Literature. It ranks among the most liveable Chinese cities in terms of green space, transportation and public safety. In 2019, Nanjing’s GDP exceeded 200 billion US dollars.

Founded in 1902, NJU enjoys a high reputation both at home and abroad, listed in the first group of high-level universities in the national “Project 211”, “Project 985” and “Double First-Class” project, and is a member of the China 9 League (C9). According to the Essential Science Indicators, 17 academic disciplines at NJU were ranked in the top 1% worldwide, and the university was ranked 120th and 31th respectively in the QS World University Rankings 2019/2020 and the QS Asian University Rankings 2019/2020. In 2020, it was ranked 9th in the Global Nature Index among global universities and 4th among Chinese universities.

Presently, the university consists of four campuses (Xianlin, Gulou, Pukou and Suzhou) with 38,267 full-time students, 13,129 bachelor’s students, 14,937 master’s students, 6,996 doctoral students and 3,205 international students who study at 31 schools and departments included. It boasts a good number of national innovative research bases, e.g. 7 National Key Laboratories, 4 MOE key bases for research in humanities and social sciences, etc., and has 2,144 faculty members, including 29 Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 4 Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and so forth.

NJU has been among the most active Chinese universities in carrying out international communication and cooperation, and has built close relationship with many first-class universities and research institutes around the world. Currently, we have developed cooperation in student and faculty exchanges, joint research, etc. with 19 British universities, such as the University of Cambridge, the University of Edinburgh and the University of Manchester. The NJU-KCL Joint Medical Research Institute is in the process of construction. In the past 2 decades, NJU has accepted and offered non-degree and degree education to over 700 British students. The vision of NJU is to develop a world-class comprehensive, research-intensive and internationalised higher learning institution with top faculty, students and research.

In general, NJU provides 80 bachelor’s, 170 master’s, and 70 doctoral programmes for the international students, covering a wide range of disciplines in humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, engineering, medicine, etc. In 2020, NJU newly launched 14 featured master’s programmes, half of which are taught in English and involve international relations, public management, information management, sociology, architecture, and urban planning. The university also accepts the students who are interested in studying Chinese or taking the courses in the other fields for 1 semester/academic year. All the majors are available for the Chinese Government Scholarship-Bilateral Programme.
