Overview
Founded on October 16, 1951, East China Normal University (ECNU) is one of the most prestigious universities in China. Affiliated to the Ministry of Education, ECNU was founded on the basis of the merger of the Great China University founded in 1924 and the Kwang Hua University (est. 1925). As a comprehensive public research university, ECNU offers education programs in educational science, social science, humanities, natural science, technical science and management science. In 1996, ECNU passed the prerequisites appraisal and became one of the universities sponsored by the major national program "Project 211". It was then approved as a member of the "Project 985" in 2006. In 2017, ECNU was assessed as rank A on the list of the national "Double First-rate" strategic plan, facilitating ECNU's new efforts and progress toward an internationalized world-class university with Chinese characteristics.
After 60 years’ development, ECNU now has four faculties, namely the Faculty of Earth Science, Faculty of Education, and Faculty of Economics and Management, Faculty of Informatics and 29 full-time schools and colleges. ECNU is also home to two State-level laboratories referred to as State Key Laboratory of Estuarine and Coastal Research, and State Key Laboratory of Precision Spectroscopy. The university offers 27 doctoral programs under the State Primary Disciplines, 36 master's programs under the State Primary Disciplines, 19 professional master's programs, 25 post-doctoral mobile research stations and 83 undergraduate programs.
In regards to its global outlook, ECNU values its cooperation and exchanges with international counterparts, such as its strategic cooperative partnerships with world-renowned universities - the ENS Group of France, New York University, University of Virginia, and Cornell University in the U.S.A., the University of Queensland in Australia, and Tokyo University in Japan.
Every year, there are about 6000 international students from 130 countries and regions across the world coming to ECNU to pursue their studies.
Special Programs
A. Global China Program
The Global China Program provides an excellent opportunity for students to learn about China through academic and cultural immersion during one semester. This program is open to current college students who wish to study in China for one semester (15 weeks). The program consists of two parts:
A. Chinese Language Course (6 credits) from beginning to advanced levels
B. English-taught Content Courses (3 credits each) on China Studies and other fields.
The Global China Program offers a credit structure which is identical to the majority of North American universities and colleges. Course contents are carefully designed to meet the requirements of North American universities and colleges.
B. Chinese Language Program
ECNU offers different kinds of Chinese language programs to satisfy different students’ needs:
l Standard Chinese Program
The classes stress the equal importance of listening, speaking, reading and writing Chinese in order to lay a solid foundation for students on the basis of practicality.
Class Hour: 20 class hours/ week
l Intensive Chinese Program
The classes are composed of intensive lectures, cultural activities and group competitions, creating a positive as well as comfort language study atmosphere.
Class Hour: 29 class hours/ week
l Business Chinese Program
The classes are designed to help you obtain a larger vocabulary and specialized knowledge of business purpose.

C. English-taught Graduate Program
For graduate applicants, we offer English-taught graduate programs:
